Alan Macfarlane briefly explains how this book is meant to relieve some of our anxiety and confusion by explaining how we got to where we are and how our world views have changed over the last five years. The book is available on Amazon, published in mid-May 2024. Here is a first reaction from someone who is translating the book into Chinese: "While translating your words, it feels as though I'...

sir it made mine mind fresh
Thank you, Prof Macfarlane. Your video came just at the right moment to remind me of that: no use in fabricating fears but finding ways to face the real ones
Ty
You must first understand what English law is to be able to comment on individual rights.
He is lost in a donnish world, knows Donne but never mentions Dylan
Why does he say 'Don't make me angry' when the interviewer asks him to spell ANNA LIVIA PLURABELLE? He expects everyone who talks to him to be familiar with FINNEGAN'S WAKE?
Don't fear Xi JinPig.
I don't fear Xi JinPig.
Fear is a good thing. Is that rustling behind me just leaves blowing in the wind or an animal that can kill me? .. as for dying.. .. Richard Dawkins says it best... "we are going to die... and that makes us the lucky ones"
thank you. how interesting and helpful!
Is it written in the stars we are doomed, well devolved as an empire, small e?
Very enlightening, thank you always.
This sounds fascinating Alan, I shall look forward to reading it. I had the pleasure of studying social anthropology with you some forty years ago and always found your historical/anthropological perspectives most interesting.
Wow even Visa card was excepted that time Nepal was really forward in90s

Intresting
♧I am fired fo aiting
Wanted to find a video that explains the Chinese social structure .. came here .. found a guy rambling about China being too difficult to understand even when studying it for 6 months because it's so very simple. And there goes another 5 min. of my life
One should read Mortimer Adler to understand the history of capitalism in the USA.
When you describe sociology as a science which was a mistake committed by Comte, you have to adhere to the same principles which are adopted in Natural or Physical Sciences. That creates a methodological problem.
2024 watching 🎉
Excellent video. A life in a bottle: confused, fearful and stressed, manufactured to be divided. With this kind of ignorance breeding we miss the vital roll cooperation has played in the rise of China. Everyone has benefited from cooperation. Passing on good practice. Without it, we simply can't move forward, progress or evolve.
This lecture really inspires me... to travel to Cambridge and start handing out free Antitussives. Must have been one heck of a flu season.
By "the work that is the foundation of the American society" you, of course, mean "The Spirit of the Laws"?
Do you truly believe that despotic, tyrannical, neopatrimonial dictatorships have the freedom of their people - whom, let's face it, they treat as the patrimony of the state - when they make their tyrannical, utterly illegitimate "laws"? No law is legitimate, unless it's been made by the people (through their democratically-elected representatives).

Come back again in nepal hats off to you ❤
Johns Hopkins' genetic study shows 80% of Palestinians carry ancient Hebrew DNA. Whereas, 97.5% of Judaics living in Israel have no ancient Hebrew and have no ancient blood ties to the land of Palestine.
A nice talk. However, Prof you do not mention oligarchy, which is the dominant force today. Also,of course, Britain does not have a Constitution, unwritten, legendary, visible or invisible.
The global south are not 'migrating' to escape 'climate.' What an absurd statement -- as though the 'climate' had *suddenly* become unlivable in the southern hemisphere at some point during the past 20 years. Utter nonsense. They are being brought to Europe and America deliberately by Western governments. The US population did not become majority Mexican in a generation by accident, or as a result of 'climate' (Mexico is no warmer than Arizona). It was done deliberately and maliciously. As an anthropologist/environmentalist, perhaps you have some objective thoughts on this obvious coordinated destruction of the Northern European race and its habitat in Europe and North America. Or are you too cowardly to say the truth. Disgraceful. Your fascination with all things exotic and foreign and with trendy political platitudes has made you a nihilist where the survival of your own culture and people are concerned.
If we cannot live peacefully with others on our own planet, how will we live peacefully with life forms from other worlds? If propaganda, sanctions and warfare are the only instruments in your diplomacy, what will you do when the other worlds have the power to simply ignore you?
Wow
"A fool has once said in his heart of hearts: 'There is no truth.'" Perhaps, this is applicable to you, and to the Chinese "friends" of yours.
The reason why the west thinks of Chinese as weak, is a process of systematic racism created by the Anglo-Saxon world.
Wow I’m shocked, he spoke in Gurung language with that Gurung lady. 9:46 Nowadays most of our younger generation of Gurung community can’t speak their own language properly and there was this foreign gentleman who knows and speaks our Gurung language so fluently back then, wow! You are genius sir much respect.🙏❤️

Chinese like to treat these old western professors and politicians very special for a very reason, I am very impressed about that too.
Even in the past few years, China changed so much that blew my mind.. the cities become a lot cleaner, greener, less polluted , even more convenient to live. of course, manufacturing improved a lot too.
Thank you Professor Macfarlane!
Xi JinPig, Chairman Meow, and their policies of common destitution are set to rise the standards of living in China to the levels of the 1010s in England.
Xi JinPig and Chairman Meow are the two "rulers" China deserves.
Xi JinPig is gonna meet Marx very soon.
Xi JinPig is the brother of Jabba The Hutt.

When will you go to meet Marx, Prof. Macfarlane? I think it's about time.
