Alan Macfarlane briefly explains how this book is meant to relieve some of our anxiety and confusion by explaining how we got to where we are and how our world views have changed over the last five years. The book is available on Amazon, published in mid-May 2024. Here is a first reaction from someone who is translating the book into Chinese: "While translating your words, it feels as though I'...

The title of Schumacher's book came originally from a principle of Leopold Kohr. Kohr wrote an argument The Breakdown of Nations, advocating for small states. Ironically, since then, some of the most beautiful products of human effort emerged in those states that are the largest on earth: viz. China and Russia.... Of course, the argument cannot end here. In other words, in order to be fair it has to be lengthy rather than small.

I attended The 'Dagon' from Sept 1949 to July 1951. Lady Antonia Frazer was one of the only girls in the school at the time. The summers were idyllic! Cricket, Ruby it was great! The latin verbs at eight years of age were a challenge! One of my best friends was Owen beament who ent on the be a cannon in the COE. We reunited as friends only a few years ago! Not a few days go by when I dont have pleasant memories of my two years at the dragon school. I thank my dad (who was a teacher there early 40's) for forking out the fees which even then would have been several hundred pounds a term! Those two years have taught me, respect for myself & others, the dignity of bristish values and many other life skills! ( contributed by Peter Hans beschorner)

Fear is a good thing. Is that rustling behind me just leaves blowing in the wind or an animal that can kill me? .. as for dying.. .. Richard Dawkins says it best... "we are going to die... and that makes us the lucky ones"

When you describe sociology as a science which was a mistake committed by Comte, you have to adhere to the same principles which are adopted in Natural or Physical Sciences. That creates a methodological problem.

Excellent video. A life in a bottle: confused, fearful and stressed, manufactured to be divided. With this kind of ignorance breeding we miss the vital roll cooperation has played in the rise of China. Everyone has benefited from cooperation. Passing on good practice. Without it, we simply can't move forward, progress or evolve.

Do you truly believe that despotic, tyrannical, neopatrimonial dictatorships have the freedom of their people - whom, let's face it, they treat as the patrimony of the state - when they make their tyrannical, utterly illegitimate "laws"? No law is legitimate, unless it's been made by the people (through their democratically-elected representatives).

The global south are not 'migrating' to escape 'climate.' What an absurd statement -- as though the 'climate' had *suddenly* become unlivable in the southern hemisphere at some point during the past 20 years. Utter nonsense. They are being brought to Europe and America deliberately by Western governments. The US population did not become majority Mexican in a generation by accident, or as a result of 'climate' (Mexico is no warmer than Arizona). It was done deliberately and maliciously. As an anthropologist/environmentalist, perhaps you have some objective thoughts on this obvious coordinated destruction of the Northern European race and its habitat in Europe and North America. Or are you too cowardly to say the truth. Disgraceful. Your fascination with all things exotic and foreign and with trendy political platitudes has made you a nihilist where the survival of your own culture and people are concerned.

If we cannot live peacefully with others on our own planet, how will we live peacefully with life forms from other worlds? If propaganda, sanctions and warfare are the only instruments in your diplomacy, what will you do when the other worlds have the power to simply ignore you?
